Shots Fired at the White House Correspondents Dinner: What We Know

Breaking | April 26, 2026

What was supposed to be a historic and celebratory evening in Washington, D.C. turned into a scene of chaos and fear on Saturday night when shots were fired at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

A Night That Changed in an Instant

President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several Cabinet members were in attendance. It was notably the first time Trump had attended the prestigious media gala as a sitting president. But before the evenings program could fully unfold, loud gunshots rang out near the main security screening area just outside the ballroom, sending roughly 2,600 guests diving under tables.

Secret Service agents immediately surrounded the President and swiftly escorted him off the stage. Cabinet members including FBI Director Kash Patel, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin were also evacuated to secure areas within the hotel. Several members of Congress were seen departing the event on foot.

The Suspect

A 30-year-old man from California was taken into custody at the security checkpoint. Armed with multiple weapons, he never made it inside the ballroom. One Secret Service officer was struck by a bullet but was protected by his bulletproof vest and is expected to make a full recovery.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed the suspect will face two charges: using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. He is set to be arraigned on Monday.

What Trump Said

At a press conference held shortly after at the White House, Trump described the shooter as a lone wolf and praised law enforcement for their swift response. Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed there is currently no reason to believe anyone else was involved, calling it the act of a lone gunman.

What Is Next

The White House Correspondents Dinner has been canceled for the evening and will be rescheduled within 30 days. Trump vowed the event would go on. This incident marks yet another serious security threat against the President, following the assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally in July 2024 and a separate threat at his West Palm Beach golf course just months later.

Stay Informed

As this story continues to develop, motivations and further details about the suspect are expected to emerge in the coming days. One thing is certain: the security checkpoint did exactly what it was designed to do, and because of that, thousands of lives were protected on Saturday night.
