Georgia Republicans abandoned their redistricting plan on June 17, 2026 after hundreds of advocates chanted Black voters matter at the State Capitol. The plan, inspired by the Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, threatened to dilute Black voting power. Sen. Raphael Warnock, the ACLU, and civil rights organizations mobilized immediately. House Speaker Jon Burns announced the legislature would not take up redistricting. Black voters make up 33% of eligible Georgia voters. This is a major win but the fight continues.

Suicide rates among Black youth ages 10-19 have increased 54% since 2019, now surpassing White peers for the first time ever. From 2007 to 2020, Black youth suicides ages 10-17 increased 144%. In 2023, suicide was the third leading cause of death for Black youth ages 10-24. A 2026 study in JAMA Network Open is the first large-scale study on risk and protective factors for Black youth suicide. Foundational Black Americans who are direct descendants of enslaved people are pushing back against proposals to broaden eligibility to recent immigrants, arguing this would dilute their rightful claims.
