Vibrant SpelHouse Homecoming 2026 celebration at Atlanta's AUC campus with Black college students

SpelHouse Homecoming 2026 Is Here: Atlanta's Biggest HBCU Celebration Kicks Off Today

October 07, 2026

ATLANTA, GA — October 7, 2026 — If you're anywhere near Atlanta's West End this week, you already know: SpelHouse is back. The annual joint homecoming celebration between Morehouse College and Spelman College — two of America's most storied HBCUs — officially kicks off today, Wednesday, October 7, with a free Kickoff Jam on the Spelman College Oval, running from noon to 5 p.m.

For five electric days (October 7–11), the Atlanta University Center will transform into the cultural capital of Black collegiate life. Thousands of alumni, students, families, and supporters are already descending on the historic West End neighborhood for what many consider the most iconic HBCU homecoming experience in the country.

A Week Full of Events

This year's SpelHouse calendar is packed. Today's Kickoff Jam opens the festivities, followed by a Homecoming Concert and Fashion Show at the Morehouse Century Campus Green on Thursday evening. Friday brings the beloved SpelHouse Legends Day Party and the Morehouse Yard Show and Market at Spelman's Oval, both drawing some of the biggest crowds of the week.

Saturday, October 10 is the centerpiece: Morehouse hosts Savannah State at 1 p.m. at B.T. Harvey Stadium (tickets at $60), preceded by the legendary tailgate experience that transforms West End Avenue, the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center Lawn, and Wellborn Street into one of Atlanta's largest outdoor celebrations. The week closes Sunday with Morehouse's Vesper Service at King Chapel and Spelman's Closing Worship Service at Sisters Chapel — a reflective and spiritual bookend to a week defined by energy and excellence.

More Than a Homecoming

SpelHouse isn't just a college event. It's a cultural institution. Each October, the celebration draws not just AUC alumni but Black professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, and culture-lovers from across the country who recognize the West End as a sacred gathering place of Black intellectual and cultural legacy.

Spelman College — founded in 1881 and consistently ranked as the nation's #1 HBCU — brings its signature White Attire Tradition to the Oval, while Morehouse, the only historically Black liberal arts college for men in the United States, brings the competitive intensity of its yard shows, step teams, and academic pride. Together, as SpelHouse, they represent something larger than any individual institution: the enduring power of Black excellence in higher education.

Why It Matters for Black Atlanta

For Black Atlanteans, SpelHouse homecoming is more than nostalgia. It's an annual reaffirmation of the West End's identity as the heart of Black Atlanta. Local businesses around the AUC report their biggest sales weeks of the year during homecoming. Black-owned restaurants, boutiques, barbershops, and salons fill with customers. The neighborhood comes alive in ways that reflect the deep economic and cultural power of the Black community when it invests in itself.

The week also serves as an important networking hub. Spelman's Technology Networking Reception — held Friday afternoon at the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts — brings together tech professionals and aspiring students in an environment that centers Black women in STEM. Meanwhile, informal connections forged at tailgates and brunches often lead to careers, business partnerships, and lifelong friendships.

Join the Celebration

Whether you're an alum coming home, a first-timer curious about the experience, or a local wanting to support the community, SpelHouse 2026 has something for everyone. Many events — including today's Kickoff Jam and the Morehouse Yard Show — are free and open to AUC students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Others require tickets, so check ahead before heading out.

SpelHouse homecoming is one of those rare events that manages to feel both deeply personal and broadly communal — a reminder that Black higher education is not just about individual achievement, but about building a legacy together. Legends live forever. Welcome home.

SpelHouse Homecoming 2026 runs October 7–11 at Morehouse College and Spelman College in Atlanta's West End. The football game against Savannah State is Saturday, October 10, at 1 p.m. at B.T. Harvey Stadium.
