The International Energy Agency has used words that should stop every one of us cold: the biggest oil shock in history. That's not hyperbole. That's the reality of what's unfolding as Iran's selective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz cuts off up to 20 million barrels of oil per day from global markets — and Brent crude has surged more than 50% since the war began just five weeks ago.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman — and it is arguably the most strategically important chokepoint on the planet. Nearly 20% of the world's oil supply passes through it daily. When Iran selectively blockades it — allowing only certain vessels passage — the ripple effects are felt at every gas pump, grocery store, and power grid on Earth.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously clarified that the strait is not closed to all traffic — only to ships controlled by what Iran considers "enemy" nations. That distinction matters little, however, when the global oil supply is hemorrhaging 20 million barrels a day.
Let's be real: energy price shocks hit working-class and Black communities hardest. From gas prices to heating bills, from food costs (which spike when transportation gets expensive) to small business operating costs — this crisis reaches into our kitchens and our wallets.

Pakistan has negotiated a partial agreement allowing 20 ships under the Pakistani flag to pass through the Strait of Hormuz — two per day. It's a small but symbolically important step. Diplomatic talks are underway in Islamabad. But markets remain deeply skeptical that the conflict will resolve quickly.
Meanwhile, the US has eased sanctions on Russia and Venezuela to unlock alternative oil sources as prices continue to climb.
