Atlanta Universities Are Phasing Out Race-Focused Programs — Here's Why It Matters

For generations, programs that centered Black and minority experiences in higher education were not a luxury — they were a corrective. They existed to address centuries of deliberate exclusion from academic spaces, from curricula, and from the scholarly conversation. They created pipelines of Black scholars, researchers, teachers, and leaders. They validated the intellectual contributions of African Americans in an academic culture that had long minimized or ignored them.

Now, those programs are being dismantled. And in Georgia, it is happening at some of the state's largest universities.

What's Happening in Georgia

Kennesaw State University has moved to phase out race-focused majors and degree paths. At the University of Georgia, similar programs are under review. These are not isolated decisions — they are part of a nationwide rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in higher education, accelerated by executive orders targeting DEI programs at federally funded institutions.

The Trump administration has moved aggressively to limit how federally funded schools address racial disparities, rolling back disparate-impact rules and closing desegregation cases that took decades to build. For universities that depend on federal funding — which is virtually every major institution — compliance with these directives is not optional. It is financial survival.

The practical result is that programs in African American Studies, Africana Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, and related fields are being restructured, absorbed into larger departments where their specific focus is diluted, or simply eliminated.

What This Means for Black Students

The impact on Black students in Georgia is multi-layered and profound.

Career pathways are disappearing. For students who aspired to careers in education, public policy, community development, or academic scholarship with a focus on African American communities, these programs were the pathway. Their elimination closes doors that took generations to open.

Intellectual belonging is under threat. One of the most documented barriers to Black student success in predominantly white institutions is a sense of not belonging — of being in a space not designed for you, studying curricula that do not reflect your history or your experience. Race-focused programs have historically served as anchors — places where Black students could see themselves in the scholarship, the faculty, and the conversation. Their elimination removes that anchor.

Faculty are being lost. When programs are eliminated, the scholars who built them — many of whom are Black academics who fought to create these intellectual spaces — face reassignment, reduced funding, or departure. The loss of Black faculty has a measurable negative impact on Black student retention and success.

The curriculum whitens. When courses and programs that center Black experiences are removed, the default curriculum — which has historically centered white, European, and Western perspectives — fills the space. This is not neutral. It is a regression.

The Broader Trend: A National Attack on Black Studies

Georgia is not an isolated case. Across the country, state legislatures and university administrators are defunding, restructuring, or eliminating African American Studies departments, diversity offices, and minority-serving programs.

In Florida, Ron DeSantis's "Stop WOKE Act" has already devastated diversity programs at state universities. Texas, North Carolina, and several other states have seen similar legislative attacks on DEI in higher education. The argument advanced is that these programs are divisive, ideological, or inconsistent with a "race-neutral" vision of higher education.

That argument ignores history. There is nothing race-neutral about an American university that was built on the exclusion of Black people. There is nothing race-neutral about an educational system that historically taught a version of American history in which Black people appeared primarily as enslaved, oppressed, or incidental. Race-focused programs did not introduce race into the university — they introduced the corrective to an existing racial imbalance.

What Students, Families, and Advocates Can Do

  • Attend your university's governance meetings: Faculty senate meetings, board of regents hearings, and public comment periods on program eliminations are your forum. Show up and make your voice heard.
  • Support HBCUs: Historically Black Colleges and Universities — including Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Fort Valley State in Georgia — are not subject to the same political pressures on their curricula. They remain spaces where Black history and Black intellectual traditions are centered by design. Invest in them. Attend them. Donate to them.
  • Connect with alumni networks: Alumni of African American Studies programs at Georgia universities are organizing to push back. Find these networks and add your voice and resources.
  • Elect school board members and legislators who support educational equity: The decisions being made at universities are downstream of political decisions. Change the politics and you change the policies.
  • Document and share: If you are a current student or faculty member at an affected institution, document what is happening and share your story with journalists, community organizations, and advocacy groups.

The Stakes Could Not Be Higher

Education is power. The history of Black oppression in America is, in significant part, a history of denying Black people access to education and of distorting the education they received. The rollback of race-focused programs in Georgia's universities is a continuation of that history in a new form.

The Atlanta University Center — home to Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Morehouse School of Medicine — has stood for over a century as living proof that Black intellectual life does not require the permission of the dominant culture to flourish. That legacy is a resource and a reminder.

Our history is not a special interest. It is America's history. And we will not let it be erased.
