Story 1: Voting Rights Win in Georgia

Georgia Republicans abandoned their redistricting plan on June 17, 2026 after hundreds of advocates chanted Black voters matter at the State Capitol. The plan, inspired by the Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, threatened to dilute Black voting power. Sen. Raphael Warnock, the ACLU, and civil rights organizations mobilized immediately. House Speaker Jon Burns announced the legislature would not take up redistricting. Black voters make up 33% of eligible Georgia voters. This is a major win but the fight continues.

Story 2: Atlanta Hosts the World Cup

Atlanta has drawn more than 250,000 visitors in the first 10 days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The city is hosting 8 total matches including a semifinal. Black Arrow FC held a Juneteenth Watch Party at Founders Green celebrating the connection between the Black community and global soccer. MARTA runs every 5 minutes on match days. Black residents celebrate while also watching to ensure Black businesses and residents benefit equitably from this historic moment.

Story 3: Black Youth Mental Health Crisis

Suicide rates among Black youth ages 10-19 have increased 54% since 2019, now surpassing White peers for the first time ever. From 2007 to 2020, Black youth suicides ages 10-17 increased 144%. In 2023, suicide was the third leading cause of death for Black youth ages 10-24. A 2026 study in JAMA Network Open is the first large-scale study on risk and protective factors for Black youth suicide. Story 4: Reparations Fight in New York

New York State reparations hearings are growing heated. Foundational Black Americans who are direct descendants of enslaved people are pushing back against proposals to broaden eligibility to recent immigrants, arguing this would dilute their rightful claims. The United States Freedmen Project argues that lineage-based eligibility is both morally right and legally necessary. This debate has major national implications for Black communities across America including Atlanta.

Story 5: HBCU Scholarships in Atlanta

The Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance is awarding up to $12,000 in scholarship book grants to Metro Atlanta students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities this fall. HBCUs including Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown are cornerstones of Black excellence in Atlanta.
