Historically Black Colleges and Universities are having a defining moment in 2026. Two of the country's most prestigious ranking institutions — Forbes and U.S. News & World Report — have released their latest assessments of America's HBCUs, placing familiar names at the top while shining new light on what these institutions accomplish for their students, communities, and the nation.

Forbes Releases Its First-Ever Dedicated HBCU Rankings

In a landmark recognition of historically Black colleges and universities, Forbes released its first ranking devoted exclusively to HBCUs in 2026, identifying 20 institutions it says provide the strongest outcomes for their graduates. The list is divided evenly between private and public institutions.

Howard University earned the No. 1 position among private HBCUs — and was also recognized by Forbes as the top HBCU in its America's Top Colleges rankings for the second consecutive year. Howard holds the distinction of being the only HBCU with an R1 research institution designation and the only HBCU ranked among U.S. News & World Report's Top 100 National Universities. Its graduates have included the first Black U.S. Supreme Court justice, the first woman U.S. Vice President, a Nobel Prize laureate, and over 170 Fulbright recipients.

Completing the top five private HBCUs on the Forbes list: Spelman College, Morehouse College, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Hampton University. Among public HBCUs, North Carolina A&T State University led the ranking, followed by Florida A&M University, Prairie View A&M University, Morgan State University, and the University of the Virgin Islands.

Atlanta's HBCUs: A Legacy of Excellence

Atlanta's HBCU corridor — one of the most concentrated collections of historically Black colleges in the world — remains a crown jewel of the 2026 rankings. Spelman College, the alma mater of Federal Reserve Board member Dr. Lisa Cook, earned a 76 percent graduation rate — the highest on the Forbes HBCU list — and was one of only two HBCUs (alongside Howard) to appear on Forbes' broader list of America's Top 500 Colleges.

Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University also feature prominently across rankings, continuing to anchor what Atlanta's West End community has long known: that the Atlanta University Center represents one of the greatest concentrations of Black academic excellence on the planet.

Record Growth and New Challenges

Beyond rankings, HBCUs are experiencing record-setting momentum in enrollment. North Carolina A&T welcomed the largest freshman class in school history for fall 2026, extending its enrollment growth streak to 13 consecutive years with an estimated 15,700 undergraduate and graduate students. Hampton University saw total enrollment grow 46 percent between 2022 and 2025.

However, the story is not without tension. In July, Howard University abruptly canceled enrollment for approximately 500 freshmen — roughly a fifth of its incoming class — after students missed deadlines demonstrating ability to cover the school's $66,182 annual cost of attendance. The episode drew national attention to the financial barriers HBCU students disproportionately face and the downstream effects of new federal parent borrowing limits, which now cap parent loans at $20,500 per year — a significant constraint for families supporting students at more expensive private HBCUs.

Fifteen HBCUs Unite to Pursue R1 Research Status

In a groundbreaking April 2026 development, fifteen historically Black colleges and universities united to pursue the nation's highest research designation — the R1 classification — in partnership with leading research universities. The coalition aims to upend historically discriminatory assumptions about what HBCUs can accomplish and reverse trends that have long disadvantaged Black institutions in research funding, infrastructure, and prestige.

If successful, this coalition effort could fundamentally transform HBCU positioning in national higher education — unlocking billions in research funding and expanding postgraduate opportunities for Black students across disciplines from STEM to medicine to social sciences.

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kicks Off HBCU Football Season

On the athletic front, HBCU football season is in full swing. Howard University opened the season by defeating Alabama A&M 31-24 in last weekend's nationally televised MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta — a fitting start for the nation's top-ranked HBCU in a city that loves its Black college football. The annual Celebration Bowl, which brings together HBCU conference champions at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta each December, remains one of the most anticipated events on the Black college sports calendar.
