The King of Pop Makes History — Again

Michael Jackson spent his life breaking records. And in 2026, his legacy is still doing it. The biographical film Michael has officially crossed $1 billion at the global box office, making it the first biopic in cinema history to ever reach that milestone. The achievement is as extraordinary as the man it celebrates — and it carries profound meaning for Black audiences around the world.

From its explosive opening weekend in April to its unstoppable run through summer 2026, Michael has proven that the story of a Black boy from Gary, Indiana who became the greatest entertainer the world has ever seen is a story that resonates with every culture on every continent.

The Numbers Are Historic

Let's talk about the scale of this achievement. Michael has earned $629.8 million internationally and $371.8 million domestically, bringing its global total to over $1.001 billion. To put that in context, the film has surpassed:

• Bohemian Rhapsody ($911 million) — the previous highest-grossing music biopic
• Oppenheimer ($975 million) — the previous highest-grossing biopic of any kind
• The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($865 million) — Lionsgate's own previous record holder

The film opened to $97 million domestically and $217 million globally in its first weekend — shattering the opening weekend record for a musical biopic that had been held by 2015's Straight Outta Compton. The cultural moment was undeniable from day one.

Jaafar Jackson: A Star Is Born

At the center of this historic achievement is 29-year-old Jaafar Jackson — Michael Jackson's real-life nephew — who portrays his late uncle in his acting debut. Jaafar has now made history as the first lead actor to debut with a billion-dollar film. His performance earned widespread praise even from critics who were tough on the film overall, with reviewers consistently noting his uncanny physical embodiment of the King of Pop.

Alongside Jaafar, the film features a powerhouse cast: Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson — two of the most respected Black actors working today. Director Antoine Fuqua, known for his mastery of grand-scale storytelling, brought the King of Pop's journey to life with stunning visuals and unforgettable musical sequences.

What This Means for Black Cinema

The success of Michael is not just a box office story — it is a cultural statement. For decades, Hollywood gatekeepers questioned whether Black-led stories could achieve global commercial success at the highest levels. Michael does not just answer that question — it obliterates it.

A biographical film about a Black man from the American Midwest, featuring a predominantly Black cast in key roles, has outperformed every biopic in the history of cinema. It has generated nearly $630 million from international markets — a testament to Michael Jackson's truly global cultural footprint and proof that Black stories are universal stories.

This is the same lesson that Black Panther, Get Out, and Straight Outta Compton taught Hollywood — and yet the industry keeps being surprised. Black audiences show up. Black stories travel. Black excellence sells.

A Legacy Bigger Than Box Office

For Black Atlanteans and Black Americans, Michael Jackson represents something that transcends entertainment. He was a pioneering Black artist who broke down racial barriers in the music industry and on MTV at a time when Black artists were routinely excluded. He was a global humanitarian and a philanthropist who gave hundreds of millions to charitable causes. He was, in many ways, a symbol of what Black genius can achieve when it is given room to breathe.

The film follows Michael's journey from his early years with the Jackson 5 — starting in Gary, Indiana — through his rise as the biggest solo artist in the world. It is a story of talent, ambition, family, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of artistic perfection. And it is a story that millions of Black viewers have embraced as their own.

What's Next?

Lionsgate has confirmed that a sequel is in development. The first film covers Michael's rise from the Jackson 5 through the release of his early solo albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. A sequel could explore the complex second half of his life — his philanthropy, his personal struggles, his comeback era, and his enduring legacy.

With Michael now standing as one of the highest-grossing films of 2026, joining only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Toy Story 5 in the billion-dollar club, Lionsgate has every incentive to continue telling this story.

Celebrate This Moment

If you haven't seen Michael yet, now is the time. And if you've already seen it, perhaps it's worth another watch — because we are living through a historic moment in cinema. The first biopic to ever reach $1 billion belongs to the King of Pop. Of course it does.

Michael Jackson — proving that the music never stops, and the legacy never fades.
