Roots Picnic 2026 Is Going to Be Historic: Jay-Z, Erykah Badu & a Legendary Lineup Hit Philadelphia
Roots Picnic 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most iconic music festivals in recent memory, and the full lineup just dropped. Philadelphia's beloved annual hip-hop and R&B celebration is going bigger than ever this year, with a stacked bill, a brand new location, and a pair of headliners that represent the absolute best of Black music culture.
The Headliners: Jay-Z with The Roots and Erykah Badu
Jay-Z will headline Saturday, May 30, performing alongside The Roots in what will mark the first time the two have shared a stage together in over a decade. The Roots will serve as his live backing band, a reunion that feels both historic and long overdue. Jay-Z's last major festival appearance was a surprise performance at Pharrell's Something in the Water Festival back in 2019, making this one of the most anticipated live moments in years.
On Sunday, May 31, neo-soul queen Erykah Badu will close out the festival as the night-two headliner. Badu has deep roots in Philadelphia, having recorded many of her breakthrough hits at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios in the city. Seeing her close out the festival on that stage will be nothing short of a spiritual experience.
This is also just the beginning of a massive summer for Jay-Z. He has two back-to-back shows at Yankee Stadium on July 10 and July 11, celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint.
The Full 2026 Lineup Is Stacked
Beyond the headliners, the rest of the lineup reads like a who's who of Black music royalty:
- Kehlani
- Brandy
- T.I.
- Mariah the Scientist
- De La Soul
- Wale and Black Thought via J. Period's Live Mixtape set
- Jermaine Dupri and Friends
- Corinne Bailey Rae
- Bilal
- Destin Conrad
- DJ Jazzy Jeff's Magnificent Block Party
- Adam Blackstone celebrating the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack featuring Yolanda Adams, Ledisi, Tamar Braxton, and Andra Day
- A special celebration of 50 Years of Go-Go Music with an all-star band
- Plus DJ sets from Funk Flex, DJ Cash Money, DJ Diamond Kuts, DJ Aktive, and more
Last year's festival featured Lenny Kravitz, GloRilla, Tems, Latto, and Kaytranada. This year's lineup goes even deeper into the culture.
A Brand New Location: Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park
2026 also marks a major milestone for the festival itself. For the first time in its history, Roots Picnic will be held at Belmont Plateau inside Philadelphia's iconic Fairmount Park. This move was inspired by Mayor Cherelle Parker's vision for Philadelphia 250, and according to Roots manager and Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee, it was a bucket-list moment for everyone involved.
The new location at 1800 Belmont Mansion Drive offers a stunning open-air park setting that should make the experience feel even more communal and celebratory. The festival takes place across both days, May 30 and May 31, 2026.
Why This Matters for Black Culture
Roots Picnic has always been more than a music festival. Since it launched, it has been a celebration of Philadelphia's rich cultural legacy, a showcase for hip-hop's past, present, and future, and a gathering space for Black excellence in music. Having Jay-Z and Erykah Badu anchoring this year's event is a statement. These are two artists who have defined Black music for decades, and seeing them headline a festival rooted in community and culture is exactly the kind of moment that reminds us why live music matters.
